Although many people throughout the world do not live a life where they receive the elevation of humanity they deserve, dignity is a quality that arises from the inner being. It is not a trait bestowed by something outside our person ('authority' and 'power' are similar in this regard.) While one's dignity can be partially crushed by the not-so-simple affairs of everyday existence, it cannot be taken away.
