East Africa

Lamu

The islands off East Africa's coast have long been fabled destinations for those seeking relief from the tedium of society (and riches!) in the white sands of the Indian Ocean. The riches we will discover and photograph are the friendly peoples, amazing buildings and lush landscapes of a small set of The Spice Islands.

Lalibela

The 13th century religious center of Lalibela is an incredible journey back in time. Located about 400 miles (645 kilometers) from Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, it is home to eleven medieval churches hewn from solid rock, an alternative "New Jerusalem" built by King Lalibela when Muslim control of the Holy Land closed those traditional sites to Christian travelers.

Our tours and workshops are in-the-field experiences open to photographers who desire to hone skills in capturing content and developing a style – all in the beautiful and mysterious environs of Cuba, Venice, Santa Fe, Mustang, Scotland and East & Southern Africa – preferably using Leica M or Fuji X digital cameras. Both of these systems are well suited to the classic image-making activity in which we engage: street photography & portraiture, landscapes and the ability to lend 'presence' to static objects like buildings and monuments.

Mindfullness / Be Here Now

Just as Buddhism attempts to get one to live in the present, mindful of the now, we boost your visual story-telling by helping you focus on the image in front of you at any given moment. The knack is to create the best, most engaging and captivating photograph you can with this one chance – right now!  Digital imaging and zoom lenses often obscure this idea, submerging it deep below the level of conscious thinking. With our ability to freely churn through hundreds of images we forget that it is this one picture right now, there before us, that is the most important image we will ever make – at least until we approach the next shot!

In photography the path you choose is not just the journey, it is also the goal: there is no end, there is simply the journey.

Southern Africa

Cape Town & The Namib

(late June – early July 2019)

We arrive in one of the great cities of the southern hemisphere, Cape Town, South Africa, and explore not only its marvels but those of its surrounding region: the Cape of Good Hope, the Garden Route along the southern coast, the notorious former prison of Robbin Island and the wine areas of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

As an add-on, we will leave the cosmopolitan delights of the Cape and head westward to a land of extraordinary superlatives: The Namib. This 2000 kilometer (1200 miles) stretch of arid land fronting the south Atlantic is home to an amazing diversity of plants and animals  - as well as dunes stretching upward 1000 feet/ 305 meters!

As an alternative, or for those wanting to extend their visit even longer, we will add a week to the east in Durban and the Drakensberg Mountains.

Join us for this incredible two week (plus) adventure in cultural and natural wonder!
